PUNE : MALIN LANDSLIDE CLAIMS 109 LIVES INCLUDING 16 CHILDREN

Death toll from Pune landslide has risen to 109. The 109 dead included 44 men, 49 women and 16 children.

"The current landslide in Pune is possibly due to human activities like farming and road construction,”  the DNA newspaper has written quoting geologist Satish Thigale. Heavy machinery such as backhoes were used to level the slopes, which has contributed to loosening the soil to such an extent that it has impacted the hill’s drainage of water, The Reuters has mentioned.

Landslide in Malin village of Pune, India has claimed lives of at least 51  people including six children, Online medias reported.

Among the 51 recovered bodies, 22 are said to be women, 23 male and six are children, IBT mentioned.

According to the NDTV News, many of those killed in the landslide have no one to mourn for them as entire families have been wiped away. Around 120 people are still feared trapped in the landslide in Malin village located 120 kilometres from Pune in Maharashtra, Hindustan Times has written quoting the Pune district collector Saurabh Rao.

A 100-member team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and 100 ambulances have been deployed in the natural calamities area.

According to a report published by Hindustan Times, the Union ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) had notified Malin village as ecologically sensitive and recommended a no-development policy in November 2013. But the warning was ignored by local and state authorities.
